While working for major compressor OEMs and their distributors, it was obvious that their business model was, and still is, built around their highly profitable “aftermarket” parts & service business. If I heard it once, I heard it a thousand times that we (compressor distributor) were an “oil company disguised as a compressor company”. This always stuck with me as it emphasized just how important recurring aftermarket sales are to the compressor OEMs and their distributors. For most compressor companies, recurring oil, parts and service sales generate the bulk of their profits. Make no mistake about it, the compressor OEMs and their distributors want to sell you as much high-margin oil and “consumable” parts as possible. And they’ve strategically tailored their maintenance manuals, service agreements and extended warrantees all in an effort to accomplish just that.
Recognizing that the OEMs’ interests were not aligned with their customers’ interest to reduce maintenance costs, I had to look elsewhere for solutions. First, I found that many industries had abandoned the outdated “time-based” preventative maintenance promoted by the OEMs and replaced it with more effective and economical “condition-based” Reliability-centered maintenance (RCM). Second, I also learned that simple fluid conditioning technologies were available that were proven to dramatically extend oil service life and slash expensive oil purchases, waste oil disposal and environmental impact. Third, and perhaps the most alarming, I discovered that more than one of the compressor OEMs were fully aware of these money-saving technologies, but chose to keep them secret and deprive their customers from their many benefits.
